Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Eggs Sickens 95 Across 14 States

The CDC, FDA, and state health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to eggs distributed by Country Eggs, LLC. As of August 27, 95 people from 14 states have been infected, with illnesses reported between January and July. Eighteen people have been hospitalized, though no deaths have occurred.

Investigations show that 92% of patients interviewed ate eggs, and sub-clusters of cases were linked to four restaurants serving egg dishes. Traceback data identified Country Eggs, LLC as the common supplier. Lab testing revealed the outbreak strain is resistant to some antibiotics, complicating treatment for severe cases. Most patients, however, recover without antibiotics.

Consumers are urged to check their homes and businesses for recalled eggs and either throw them out or return them to stores.
