Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is officially set for his long-awaited return to the Octagon after nearly five years away from competition. The Irish superstar will face former featherweight champion Max Holloway in a welterweight showdown at UFC 329 on July 11 at the famous T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight marks one of the biggest comeback stories in UFC history as McGregor prepares to compete for the first time since his devastating leg injury against Dustin Poirier in July 2021.
The matchup instantly became one of the most talked-about fights in mixed martial arts because it reunites two fan favorites more than a decade after their first encounter. McGregor and Holloway originally fought in 2013 during McGregor’s early UFC rise, with the Irish fighter earning a unanimous decision victory. At the time, Holloway was still developing into the elite competitor he would later become. Since then, Holloway has built a legendary career, becoming one of the greatest featherweights in UFC history and consistently competing against the best fighters across multiple divisions.
For McGregor, this comeback carries enormous pressure and attention. The 37-year-old has not won regularly inside the Octagon in recent years, with his only UFC victory in the past decade coming against Donald Cerrone in 2020. Despite his limited activity, McGregor remains one of the biggest global stars in combat sports, known for transforming UFC into a worldwide mainstream phenomenon through his charisma, trash talk and knockout power.
McGregor’s absence from the sport has been filled with setbacks, controversies and injuries. After suffering the horrific broken leg in his trilogy defeat against Poirier, he spent years recovering while repeatedly teasing a comeback. He had been expected to fight Michael Chandler in 2024, but the bout collapsed after McGregor reportedly broke his toe just weeks before the event. The cancellation frustrated fans who had waited years to see him compete again.
Adding further complications to his return, McGregor accepted an 18-month suspension last year after violating the UFC anti-doping policy by missing three required drug tests during 2024. The suspension officially ended in March 2026, clearing the way for his comeback. Reports also revealed that McGregor has undergone more testing this year than any other fighter on the UFC roster, signaling increased scrutiny surrounding his return.
Inside the cage, Holloway presents an extremely dangerous challenge. The Hawaiian star is respected for his incredible cardio, relentless striking output and durability. Over the past several years, he has remained active against elite competition and continued evolving as one of MMA’s most complete fighters. Many analysts believe Holloway’s recent consistency and activity could make him the favorite despite McGregor’s superstar status and knockout ability.
McGregor’s UFC legacy remains historic regardless of recent struggles. He became the promotion’s first simultaneous two-division champion after capturing the featherweight title in 2015 and the lightweight championship in 2016. His stunning 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo remains the fastest finish in a UFC title fight. McGregor also crossed into boxing in 2017 for a massive money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. before returning to MMA for his heated rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov in one of the biggest pay-per-view events in UFC history.
Outside the cage, McGregor’s career has repeatedly been overshadowed by legal and public controversies. In 2018, he was arrested in New York after attacking a bus carrying UFC fighters. In 2019, he was fined in Ireland for assaulting a man in a Dublin pub. More recently, in late 2024, McGregor was ordered to pay damages in a civil case involving allegations made by Nikita Hand.
Despite everything surrounding him, McGregor’s return remains one of the most anticipated moments in combat sports. UFC 329 is expected to draw huge global attention as fans wait to see whether “The Notorious” can reclaim his place among the elite or whether Holloway will spoil the comeback in spectacular fashion.
The event will also feature several major names across the card. Paddy Pimblett is scheduled to face Benoit Saint-Denis after suffering defeat to Justin Gaethje earlier this year. British flyweight Lone'er Kavanagh will meet Brandon Royval, while unbeaten prospect Luke Riley faces Kai Kamaka in a featherweight contest.
