Amanda Anisimova fought back from a set down to defeat Naomi Osaka 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and book her place in the US Open final against Aryna Sabalenka.
The 23-year-old American, who suffered a historic 6-0 6-0 loss to Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon final just eight weeks ago, showed resilience to claim victory in a three-hour contest at Flushing Meadows. Anisimova, now the youngest player since Serena and Venus Williams in 2002 to reach both the Wimbledon and US Open finals in the same year, collapsed to her knees in celebration after the win.
Her triumph follows a semi-final victory over Swiatek, which she called “the most meaningful victory of my life.” It marks a remarkable comeback for Anisimova, who stepped away from tennis in 2023 for mental health reasons before climbing back into the top 10 this season. Osaka, returning to form after her maternity break and recent coaching change, impressed throughout the tournament but fell short despite her power game and improved movement. “She is playing amazing tennis, I’m so proud of her,” Anisimova said of the Japanese star.
Anisimova now faces world number one Aryna Sabalenka, who battled back from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final. Sabalenka, the defending champion, becomes the first player since Serena Williams to reach three straight US Open finals and is chasing her fourth Grand Slam singles crown.
“I will fight for every point like it’s the last of my life,” Sabalenka said.
The final promises a clash between Anisimova’s resilience and Sabalenka’s power as both players chase US Open glory.
