Trump Extends Iran Strike Pause as Talks Progress Amid Rising Tensions and Global Market Impact

Donald Trump has extended a pause on strikes targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure, saying ongoing discussions with Tehran are “going very well” despite continued military escalation across the region. The pause, initially set for five days, has now been extended by an additional 10 days until April 6. Trump stated the decision followed a request from Iran, although officials in Tehran have not formally confirmed active negotiations and previously indicated they were awaiting a response to their ceasefire conditions.

At a recent cabinet meeting, Trump emphasized that the United States had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, claiming major damage to its navy, air force, and missile systems. He also warned that failure to reach a deal could result in further military action, describing the US response as potentially severe. Special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that Washington has shared a 15-point peace proposal with Iran through diplomatic channels. However, uncertainty remains over whether formal negotiations are actively underway.

Meanwhile, tensions on the ground continue to rise. Israel reported intercepting new missile barrages from Iran while also carrying out strikes in Tehran and Beirut. Explosions have been reported in multiple locations, signaling ongoing conflict despite diplomatic signals. Global markets reacted quickly to Trump’s announcement. Oil prices, which had surged amid fears of supply disruptions, dropped shortly after the pause extension. However, concerns remain high due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.

The conflict is also impacting countries heavily dependent on fuel imports, particularly across Asia, where governments are introducing emergency measures to manage rising energy costs. Adding to international concern, the International Atomic Energy Agency has warned of a potential radiological disaster if military strikes continue near nuclear facilities, urging all sides to exercise maximum restraint. As diplomatic efforts and military actions continue simultaneously, the situation remains highly volatile, with global economic and security implications closely tied to developments in the coming days.
