Iran Warns of “Devastating” Response as Trump Escalates Threats

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Iran, threatening to target key infrastructure if Tehran fails to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The deadline, which had already been extended, now adds further uncertainty to an already volatile situation. Iran responded with a stark warning of “much more devastating” retaliation if civilian targets such as power plants or bridges are attacked. Military officials indicated that any strike on non-military infrastructure would trigger a broader and more intense response, raising fears of a deeper regional conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of the crisis, as disruptions in the vital shipping route have begun to impact global oil supply. The waterway is a critical channel for energy exports, and ongoing tensions have already driven oil prices above $110 per barrel, reflecting market anxiety over prolonged instability. Violence has continued across multiple fronts. In Iran, airstrikes have hit both residential areas and academic institutions, including Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, where damage to facilities also caused gas outages in parts of the العاصمة. Civilian casualties have been reported following strikes on residential buildings.

Elsewhere in the region, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed at least 15 people, including a child, while Iranian missiles targeting Israel have been intercepted over major cities. Additional attacks and counterattacks have been reported across neighboring countries, indicating that the conflict is widening beyond its initial scope. Legal experts have raised concerns that threats to deliberately target civilian infrastructure could violate international law, potentially constituting war crimes if carried out. However, US officials have maintained that military actions will remain within legal frameworks.

At the same time, the United States confirmed the successful rescue of a second airman from a downed fighter jet in Iran, following a high-risk mission in mountainous terrain. Further updates are expected as the situation develops, with both sides showing no clear signs of de-escalation.
