Are We Spending Too Much Time Online?

Are we genuinely choosing how we spend our digital time, or are our devices choosing for us?

How often do you check your phone without actually having a reason?

Technology has made everyday life incredibly convenient. We use smartphones to communicate, study, work, shop, navigate, create content, and stay informed. But convenience can easily become constant consumption.

That is why digital wellbeing matters.

The problem is not necessarily spending time online. Some screen time can be highly valuable. Watching an educational video, attending an online class, talking to friends, working on a project, or learning a new skill is very different from spending an hour automatically scrolling through short videos.

For Gen Z mental wellbeing, the challenge can be particularly complicated because social media is deeply integrated into everyday communication and entertainment.

A person can open an app for five minutes and suddenly realize that 45 minutes have passed. Notifications can interrupt concentration, while algorithms continuously provide another piece of content to watch.

Developing better social media habits does not mean abandoning technology. Small changes can make a difference. Turning off unnecessary notifications, creating phone-free periods, avoiding screens immediately before sleeping, or simply asking why you are opening an app can help create more intentional habits.

A healthy digital lifestyle is not about having the least amount of screen time possible. It is about making sure technology serves your priorities rather than constantly taking control of your attention.

There is also a social element. Seeing carefully edited versions of other people's lives can create unrealistic expectations about success, appearance, relationships, travel, and lifestyle.

Perhaps the real goal is not to disconnect completely but to become more conscious about what we consume, why we consume it, and how it affects our everyday lives.

Do you think your phone makes your life easier, or do you sometimes feel that it controls too much of your time?
