A few years ago, using AI at work usually meant asking a chatbot to write an email, summarize a document or brainstorm ideas.
That is changing.
AI is increasingly moving from simply answering questions to helping complete tasks that require multiple steps. Instead of asking an AI to write something for you, you can increasingly give it a goal and let it work through parts of the process.
For Gen Z, this creates a more interesting question than "Will AI take my job?"
The real question is:
Can you learn to work with AI without becoming dependent on it?
The difference is important.

An increasingly capable AI agent could potentially be asked to research the subject, analyse information, organise findings, create a draft and work through revisions.
The shift is from responding to instructions toward completing tasks.
That doesn't mean AI can independently handle every job. It cannot.
But it does mean the way people interact with software is changing.
Instead of learning every step of a digital process themselves, people may increasingly delegate parts of that process to AI.
That could change what productivity looks like.
This isn't some distant workplace prediction.
Gen Z is already using AI.
Research from ETS found that workers estimate AI is involved in around 32% of their tasks, with the figure rising to 38% among Gen Z workers.
A 2026 KPMG survey of Gen Z interns also found that nearly 30% of their assignments involved some form of AI assistance.
The question, therefore, isn't whether Gen Z will work alongside AI.
It already is.
The bigger question is what happens when AI becomes capable of handling increasingly large portions of the work.
Imagine starting your career with AI helping you research, write, analyse data, prepare presentations, organise information and automate repetitive tasks.
You could potentially accomplish more in less time.
But there is another side to that equation.
This may be the part we don't discuss enough.
AI can help you finish something without necessarily helping you understand it.
If you use AI to write every email, solve every problem, research every subject and make every difficult decision, you might become extremely efficient.
But efficiency isn't the same thing as capability.
There is a difference between:
"AI helped me do this."
and
"I understand why this is correct."
That distinction will become increasingly important as AI becomes more capable.
The goal shouldn't be to avoid AI.
The goal should be to make sure you remain capable without it.
Let AI help you move faster.
But understand the work it is helping you produce.
If AI writes your analysis, you should still be able to explain the reasoning behind it.
AI can produce convincing answers that are incomplete, inaccurate or simply wrong.
Never confuse confidence with correctness.
The more important the decision, the more important verification becomes.
Communication.
Judgment.
Creativity.
Problem-solving.
Collaboration.
Critical thinking.
These aren't skills that suddenly become irrelevant because AI exists.
In fact, they may become more valuable because someone still needs to decide what should be done in the first place.
Become an excellent professional who knows how to use AI.
A marketer who understands AI.
A designer who understands AI.
A developer who understands AI.
A researcher who understands AI.
The competitive advantage isn't simply knowing how to prompt a chatbot.
It's knowing how to combine AI with real expertise.
This may be the biggest opportunity for Gen Z.
Don't spend all your time watching AI evolve.
Use it.
Build a small business.
Create a tool.
Start a newsletter.
Develop a portfolio.
Automate a repetitive process.
Test a side hustle.
AI becomes much more valuable when you move from consumer to creator.
AI isn't replacing the need to be capable. It's changing what being capable means.
The advantage probably won't belong to the person who uses the most AI.
It will belong to the person who understands when to use it, when not to use it, and how to judge what it produces.
The future of work isn't necessarily humans versus AI.
It may be people who know how to work with AI versus people who don't.
And that makes learning how to use these tools thoughtfully a career skill, not just a technology trend.
