Tensions in the Middle East intensified on Monday as Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah exchanged fire across the Israel–Lebanon border, marking a significant expansion of the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The Israeli military ordered residents of more than 50 towns and villages in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate, warning of imminent strikes. The move came after Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, launched rockets and drones toward northern Israel. Israeli officials said the projectiles landed in open areas, but confirmed retaliatory airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions, including in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Smoke was seen rising over parts of Beirut overnight, with residents reporting multiple explosions that disrupted the capital in the early hours. Thousands of civilians fled their homes, triggering severe traffic congestion in Beirut and the southern city of Sidon. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam cautioned against rocket launches from southern Lebanon, warning that such actions endanger national security and provide justification for further Israeli attacks. The escalation follows broader regional turmoil after Iranian strikes across the Gulf, including attacks on airports and ports. These actions have disrupted aviation, shipping, and energy markets, sending global oil prices sharply higher and forcing widespread airspace closures. Business hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha have been affected, highlighting the vulnerability of Gulf economies heavily reliant on aviation and tourism.
Meanwhile, the United States confirmed that three American service members were killed and five seriously wounded in Iranian attacks, according to US Central Command. US President Donald Trump warned that “there will likely be more” American casualties as US and Israeli military operations against Iran continue, potentially for weeks. Security concerns have also spread to Europe-linked military infrastructure. The UK Ministry of Defence said a British RAF base in Cyprus was targeted by a suspected drone strike, though no casualties were reported. The incident underscores the widening geographical scope of the conflict.
In response to Iranian attacks on civilian and strategic facilities, the Gulf Cooperation Council, comprising Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman, condemned Tehran’s actions as violations of sovereignty and international law. While urging restraint and dialogue, the GCC warned it would take “all necessary measures” to safeguard regional security. As the conflict enters its third day, international concern is growing over the risk of a prolonged, multi-front war, with mounting civilian displacement, economic disruption, and rising global energy prices adding to the pressure for diplomatic intervention.
